The Warehouse Is Very Dry, Why Do Shoes Still Get Moldy

Mar 27 , 2023

The occurrence of mold on shoes in the storage environment cannot be separated from three factors: temperature, humidity, and bacterial source. When one of the temperature or humidity conditions is met, the risk of mold on shoes will be greatly increased.

Due to the fact that the shoe material itself contains nutrients necessary for mold growth, and the raw materials used in the processing process contain components such as oil and protein, these provide a large amount of nutrients for mold growth. In addition, mold itself has a tenacious growth and reproduction ability. As long as the temperature and humidity conditions are appropriate, mold spores will follow the airflow and invade the shoe materials and shoes during the processing and storage of shoes, as well as the storage and use of finished leather products, resulting in mold spots. Severe mold spots can make the upper brittle, affecting the sales and use performance of shoes.

Changes in temperature and humidity are not easily felt by the senses, which is why sometimes we feel that the warehouse is very dry, but the warehouse still has moldy shoes.

So what can factories do to minimize the risk of mold on shoes? We prevent shoe mildew from four aspects: materials, storage temperature and humidity, disinfection and sterilization, ultraviolet sterilization, and packaging.

1. Monitor raw materials and semi-finished products:

Conduct humidity testing on incoming and outgoing raw materials to ensure that incoming packaging materials enter the warehouse without being infected with mold; Regularly inspect raw materials and semi-finished products for moisture and mold; Strictly classify packaging materials according to their properties, and take corresponding stacking measures: packaging materials and finished products should be placed at least 60cm away from the wall, at least 15cm away from the floor, and at least 1m away from the doors and windows, and should be placed on plastic pads or shelves. Timely clean up waste packaging materials, moldy and damp packaging materials, and keep the floor clean and tidy; Seal unused packaging materials in a timely manner;

2. Control the temperature, humidity and disinfection and sterilization of the storage link:

Check whether there is water leakage or seepage in the warehouse, and handle it in a timely manner; Keep the warehouse dry and ventilated, follow up the temperature and humidity situation in the morning and evening, and make written records; Use a dehumidifier to keep the humidity of the warehouse below 60%.

Disinfection and sterilization the storage environment regularly, and strictly control the number of mold spores; KOBSO Mold Prevention Service provides on-site mold prevention testing based on local conditions, as well as supporting national testing institutions, which can effectively help you solve the mold problem. When the rainy season comes, a good mold prevention plan is essential. Welcome to consult us!

3. Standardize the use of ultraviolet radiation for sterilization:

During the production process of shoes, there are multiple production and storage procedures, and it is difficult to avoid contamination with bacterial sources during the process. Effective ultraviolet disinfection is required to kill the mold before entering the finished product warehouse to ensure the safety of the finished product warehouse. It is recommended that the factory assembly line be equipped with UV lamps with certain efficacy, and timely follow up the detection of lamp power to ensure effective sterilization of UV lamps.

4. Add and use anti mold products:

Use KOBSO Anti mold picker, along with the application of anti mold chip, to spray mildew inhibitor on raw materials correctly, and add an appropriate amount in rainy seasons.  After that, ensure that the raw materials are dry and enter the production workshop; Add an appropriate amount of anti mold products according to the shoe type, material, etc. It is recommended that you use KOBSO Anti mold picker and Moisture-proof Desiccant, including carbon desiccant, before the rainy season to reduce the risk of dampness and mildew during this period.
